Iquitos Amazon

Iquitos is the biggest city in the world that is not reachable by road and is the capital of the Peruvian Amazon. Furthermore, it is located beside the Amazon, Nanay and Itaya rivers in the north-east of Peru. With 850 species of animals the floodplain forest near the city offers a great starting point for a true Amazon experience. Certainly if you consider the fact that the Amazon River is one of the seven natural wonders of the world!

Iquitos is also known for its spiritual tourism; Ayahuasca is a drink made from the vine ”Banisteriopsis caapi” which is studied extensively for its medicinal purpose. The drink is also named nation’s cultural heritage.

We offer a 5 days / 4 nights tour, a 4 days / 3 nights tour, a 3 days / 2 nights tour and a 2 day / 1 night tour. The description as written beneath generally describes the itinerary for all of these options.

Day 1
We will pick you up at the airport of the city of Iquitos. From here, depending on the time, we organize a brief walking tour through the city. Afterwards, we get on our speedboat to take our first ride on the river. In the months November until July we get the chance to come across several typical boat-houses. Upon arrival at our lodge we enjoy a typical ‘forest’ drink, let’s go with the flow!

We show you the main facilities and the lodges where you can drop your stuff. Thereafter, we explore the jungle and its flora and fauna for the first time. Soon after this short introduction we will have our lunch and a short rest because we have to prepare for the afternoon tour where we will search for grey and pink dolphins! Besides this, we visit a riverside family which are also known to keep some amazon animals such as anacondas, sloths, turtles and more. And as we all are visiting the jungle to get to know more about the local culture and traditions, we can enjoy a ‘aphrodisiac’ drink, thought to have medicinal power and – as the name suggests – stimulates sexual desire. We will end this day with a sunset view over the Amazon where after you can participate to a hike in the dark, this is the time for some animals to wake up! Watch BIG insects, batrachians (a type of amphibia), tarantulas (yes you know this one) and many more. After our hike we return to our lodge, have dinner and enjoy different stories and myths of the Amazon.

In the case of a tour longer than 2 days, the visiting of a riverside family is not on day 1 but on day 3!

Day 2
In the morning we firstly leave our lodge and enter our canoe excursion to go bird watching in their natural habitat. We can get to know the famous Hoatzin, better known as the reptile bird. After this early excursion we can enjoy our breakfast to get some energy for the rest of the day. We will visit a native group of Amazon inhabitants, known as the Yagua people and we will get to know their typical way of clothing, language and ways of living. The Yagua people will also demonstrate how they hunt birds and small mammals with their ‘pucuna’’ or blowgun. Besides this, they will show you the crafts which they make, a perfect souvenir to remember your tour. After visiting the indigenous people, we will return to our lodge and enjoy lunch.

In the afternoon, after some rest, we can go for recreational fishing. In the Amazon waters we can find species like catfish, starfish and the famous piranha! As the evening is falling we go for a canoe excursion on the Amazon river and hear the beautiful sounds that the rainforest produces. We drive back to our lodge and take our well-deserved nap.

In the case of a 2 day tour we leave to the city of Iquitos after the lunch at 3 p.m. We then transfer you back to your hotel or to the airport of Iquitos.
In the case of a tour longer than 3 days, the recreational fishing activity is on day 4! The time that is left over is used to get to know the Amazon more thoroughly and be able to visit deeper retreats.

Day 3
In the early morning, we take our canoe tour to the Padre Island where we can observe loads of different species of birds. During the ride, we also see the Victoria Regia (lila), known as the largest aquatic plants in the world. Besides this, we get our second chance of seeing grey and pink dolphins during our travels. Moreover, we can watch one of the largest freshwater fish, the arapaima gigas which can reach up to 3 meters and 200 kg. In some cases, we can get lucky and spot alligators. During a tour we can also watch over some riverside families and get the chance to meet one of them (as previously described on ‘’Day 1’’ of this itinerary). After visiting the family we have our lunch and some time to relax. To finish this day, we organize a special tributary canoe tour, where you can shoot the most amazing pictures to remember the Peruvian Amazon.

In the case of a
3 day tour we leave to the city of Iquitos after the lunch at 3 p.m. We then transfer you back to your hotel or to the airport of Iquitos.

In the case of a 5 day tour we use the beginning of the third day to visit ‘Isla de Monos.’ At this private preservation for monkeys we can visit several species of monkeys that are in danger of extinction, such as the tamarin and saki monkey. After visiting the preservation we continue with the tributary excursion as written above.

Day 4
On this day, we have some more time to sleep in (just a little bit!) and do the recreational fishing excursion trying to catch our own fish in the Amazon river! We return to our lodge and have our lunch. We have another boat excursion where we can set eyes on the beautiful Amazon, increasing our chances of seeing wildlife on our way to a small town where we can meet local people and get to know their original way of living. After spending some time with the local people we return to our lodge.

In the case of a 4 day tour we leave to the city of Iquitos after the lunch at 3 p.m. We then transfer you back to your hotel or to the airport of Iquitos.

Day 5
Today we have a morning walk while the guide will tell you the basic indications for survival in the jungle. Afterwards, you get the chance to go for a canoe rowing excursion and visiting a local family. Unfortunately, this is the last day of our tour and after our lunch at the lodge we have to head back to Iquitos at around 3 p.m. We then transfer you back to your hotel or to the airport of Iquitos.
