Manu National Park

The National Park of Manu, a World Cultural Heritage Site, is one of the areas with the greatest biodiversity on the planet. It is located in the south of Peru, in the eastern sector of the Andes mountain range and bordering the Amazon basin, it is the only park in Latin America to cover the full range of environments, from low, tropical jungle to cold, high grassland over 4.000 meters height. The park covers an area of 1.716.295 hectares and is one of the best destinations for nature tourism. The low basin of the River Manu is marked by the exuberance of the Amazon plain.

Day 1: Cusco – Pilcopata
Get ready for a really early morning pick-up at your hostel or hotel! After we picked up everyone with our bus at around 06:00 a.m. we leave the city of Cusco and ascent to the mountain area of Paucartambo. Throughout the ride we already visit some old archeological funerary towers, named chullpas of Ninamarca. Afterwards, we start our descent to the cloud forest (‘’A cloud forest, also called a water forest and primas forest, is a generally tropical or subtropical, evergreen, montane, moist forest characterized by a persistent, frequent or seasonal low-level cloud cover, usually at the canopy level’’ – Wikipedia ‘’Cloud forest’’), filled with plants like orchids, helicoids and primitive ferns. Besides flora, we also get the chance to see a lot of wildlife, including quetzals, snakes, monkeys and birds like the Cock-of-the-Rock, the Amazonian Umbrella bird, Trogons and more (with some luck we can experience the mating ritual). Scroll through the pictures below to see a first glimpse! In some occasions we find the only living South American bear, named the Spectacled Bear. After the first afternoon of exploring the flora and fauna of the Peruvian Forest we arrive at a village called Pillcopata where we stay in our typical forest lodge (showers and toilets available; as for all our lodges during this tour!)

At this day, it is optional to do the ‘’Canopy Walk.’’ As the name suggests, during this hike you will go to high altitudes and walk across wooden bridges between trees in order to see the forest from higher up! Extra costs are 18 dollars per person.

Day 2: Pilcopata – Amazon Lodge – Machuhuasi Lake

After our breakfast we continue by bus for a 1.5 hour drive. We come across an animal rescue center and several coca plantations. The ride will be through the forest, so there is no chance getting bored while watching monkeys fly across trees! We then arrive at the Atalaya Port and take a motor boat to cross the river of ‘’Alto Madre De Dios,’’ to eventually arrive around midday at our second lodge. After some rest we continue to the lake of Machuhuasi which we can explore by balsa rafts for about 3 hours. The lake is famous for its beauty and number of birds like hoatzin, herons, oropendolas, caciques parrots, toucans and mammals like capybaras and different kinds of monkeys. After returning to the lodge for dinner it is possible to experience the forest in complete darkness (of course with a guide).

Day 03: Amazon Lodge – Parrots Clay Lick – Lost Lake

Early in the morning we take our boat for approximately 30 minutes to reach the Parrots Clay Lick where we can observe hundreds of parrots and other animals like small macaws. After this exciting view we go to the easeful jungle and hike for about 5km into the forest, again with the possibility of spectating a lot of animals during the hike. Besides this, if the weather is nice, we can take a swim and try to catch some fish in the river (watch out for your friends fishhooks!). After some relaxing we continue and go to the Lost Lake. Yet another lake with some other species of birds (giant toucan, vultures, harpy eagles) and mammals. After our visit to the lake we go back to our lodge and again for those who are not yet tired enough, an extra night activity is possible?

During day 3 -for the dare-devils among us- it is possible to do the Canopy zipline, or as we would like to call it: ‘’the flying-fox’’ (which is ziplining with your head faced to the ground like a true batman!).  Extra costs for the flying fox are 18 dollars per person.

Day 04: Amazon-lodge – Atalaya – Cusco

Unfortunately… already our final of the tour! After our breakfast we will come back by boat to the port of Atalaya and take the bus back to Cusco. We arrive here at around 06:00 p.m. where we finalize the tour, and leave you for your deserved (luxurious) dinner and rest!
